Liberals Pause Their Hunting Rifle Ban

With your support and advocacy, our Conservative team was able to force the Liberals to back down from their proposed hunting rifle ban.

This is good news, but we can’t let our guard down.

Earlier today, the Liberals withdrew amendments to Bill C-21 that would have banned millions of hunting rifles.

After months of defending these amendments and denying their negative impact on law-abiding hunters and farmers, today’s withdrawal is an admission that they knew exactly what they were doing.

The Liberals only backed down because they got caught and people spoke up.

When the Liberals initially brought forward these amendments, they tried to do so quietly by adding them into the bill during committee stage.

This allowed them to avoid a fulsome democratic debate and prevent experts from weighing in.

Many residents reached out to my office and asked me to push back.

Our whole Conservative team did exactly that.

We resisted the Liberal attack on farmers, hunters, and Indigenous people who have used hunting rifles safely and responsibly for generations.

Rather than working to keep communities safe by going after the illegal guns used by criminals and street gangs, Justin Trudeau chose to target those already following the law.

No one believed that going after hunters would reduce violent crime across the country – up 32% since Justin Trudeau took office.

The hunting rifle ban was always about dividing Canadians, not public safety.

Unfortunately, Justin Trudeau’s retreat is no guarantee he won’t try to do this again.

In December, he said in an interview that this is his goal.

We must stay vigilant.

Conservatives will continue to be strong defenders of the traditions and way of life of millions of law-abiding Canadians.

We’ll continue supporting common-sense firearms policies that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals.
